Dear Family and Friends
Hello
Everyone. I am back for week three of the “Light the world” campaign. How have
you been serving over the past two weeks? If you have been keeping up with us,
the first week we were to focus on serving in our communities and around the
world. Were you able to check out the wonderful ideas on the light the world

Were you able to check out the’ Follow Our Savior

Be sure to
leave a comment in the comment box and let me know how you and your families showed
your light to lift and Light the World in your own way so far. It can be really fun to do service projects
with your children no matter what their ages. It is not always easy, but it will be totally
worth it in the long run. It is so very important that we teach our children to
serve one another, beginning in our own homes. If our children get into the
practice when they are very young, they are more likely to continue serving
others as they grow upπ
I think I told
you about the time when I had one of my students who had his father over in Afghanistan.
We made all kids of things to send over to his dad and his platoon while he was
over there. I took pictures of each of the children on a rainbow cushion, which
then became the feathers of the turkey. The picture of his child became the
wing of the turkey. I just cut the pictures in the corresponding shapes and
glued them onto the turkey I had prepared on cardstock. Those children helped me to fill boxes with
goods to be mailed over to those servicemen in his platoon.
We made handprint
turkeys of each of the students several times and put them into zip loc baggies
with a few different types of candy and a little verse to thank them for their
service. The turkey had to be cut into either four or six pieces to fit into
the boxes. Then we send one part of the turkey in each box. A little bit off a
game for them – to look forward to another package in the mail. I tried really hard
to think of all of the other soldiers in his unit when we sent the packages,
because I didn’t want anyone left out – just in case they weren’t getting mail
from home for one reason or another. I would think that it is hard enough being
out there in a war one with all of your loved ones far away and then not to
receive any mail from anyone – that would make it a lot harder, I think.
Anyway, it
was a great experience for all of my students as well as for myself. Being a
part of some type of service can uplift your spirits in a way that nothing else
can do. We continue sending things up into the new year. We sent a giant
Christmas tree what the kids mae with their handprints of green paint, and the
ornaments opened up Christmas tree like you find on advent calendars. Only these
pictures were all over the tree in the shape of ornaments. Each one opened to
show something that his child was doing during the year, so that the dad didn’t
miss out too much on his child’s activities while he was gone.
Again, we had to
cut the Christmas tree into parts and sent it one piece in each box with
instructions on how to assemble it when their received all of the pieces. I hope
it was fun for all of those soldiers in his unit. But as I was saying, my
students were amazing all were 4 – 5 years old and they listened to my
instructions and counted out the items that they were assigned to put into the
box or bag in front of them. They did a
wonderful job and the contention in our classroom during those months was at an
all time low. There is much to be said about serving others – it takes you away
from your own problems; it helps you focus on what Jesus would do if He were
here – and He would help others, any way that He could.
You know I
received a very nice thank you from a few of those soldiers many months later. They
took a picture of themselves with Santa hats on and they were standing behind
the turkey that we had made and sent over to them. And they sent that picture
back to us, so, our turkey went across the globe and back againπ
then when his dad came home, he presented the 4-year-old class with a flag. Not
just any old American flag – oh, no, it was the flag that had hung in the
compound in Afghanistan where he had been serving.
He had asked
a local villager to make him a glass fronted triangular box to hold that flag. This
very same flag graces the welcome center of out YMCA, even though that student moved
away a few years ago, the flag is still there as a reminder of the service of a
class of 12 amazing children in our Four- year-old class. And I feel that if
those little children can do such selfless service for someone that they had
never met – we can each do something as well to give our Savior a gift this Christmas
season. Remember, remember, that is what Christmas is all about! Until my next
post, keep up the good that you have been doing for your country, community,
neighborhood, and this week for your familiesπ
