Post # 126 – Come, Follow Me --- Week # 24 -- “It Is Finished” Matthew 27Mark 15Luke 23John 19

Dear Family and Friends

I do hope and pray that you have had a wonderful beginning to your summer thus far😊 the first couple of weeks my students and I did not go on any field trips, but these past two weeks have been a little bit long for me.

It makes for really long days for me when we have field trips. Sometimes this puts me at work by 6 or 6:15 until 6:30 or 7p.m. Whenever I schedule my field trips, I schedule them for as early in the morning as I can.

It is only in this way that the children and I are not out in the heat van, traveling in the middle of the day when it is so hot. I know that the older kids schedule their field trips in the afternoon and that works for them, and this is a goof thing -- for the older ones!

but my little ones don’t fare as well in the heat. They tend to get really cranky and sometimes a bit mean. If the truth be known, most of them will take a nap in the afternoon when given the opportunity to do so😊 Therefore we tend to stick with our mornings😊

Many days I wish I could take a nap with them, just to catch up on a little bit of sleep but then who would care for them if I did that when you have cancer – and I am sure it doesn’t matter what type you have – you probably struggle to get enough rest.

I know that I sure do. I do not sleep well during the night at all. if it isn’t my being over tired, then it is my legs cramping up, or my neuropathy hurting my hands and feet, or being nauseous, or running to the bathroom, or my brain simply doesn’t want to shut off for the night.

It seems like when I close my eyes to go to sleep, my brain clicks on into thinking mode Sometimes this can be a good thing, because sometimes I remember things I need to be doing for the next day’s preparation, other times the things that come to my mind can simply wait until I wake the next day to think about them, but my brain doesn’t seem to think so😊 Is there a fix for this??

There of course is the other side when my brain sends me important information that I could not receive during my busy day and those are the thing that I must get up and write down – right away – before I forget them!! If I don’t write them down – they will be gone by the morning😊 you guys don’t ever have these problems, do you??? 😊 😊 😊 Of course, some of you do!!

Well I guess that is enough of my ramblings for now. Let’s get to our lesson for today😊 We will be studying Matthew 27; Mark 15; Luke 24; and John 19 so go on and get your scriptures out, I will wait for you to get them😊 did you complete the readings for this week’s lesson? Okay good! Now, let’s review the lesson together.

First let’s make a list of some words or phrases that remind you of the events that were described in our readings for this week. Do you remember what you read? Now let’s write down some words that might describe the way you felt as you read about these events? Why did you feel this way? These were the things that our instructor talked with us about and the questions he asked us.

Let’s begin our lesson today by making a list—you could have your family do this as well if you would like😊 I want you to think about the chapters that you have read throughout this past week. Think about some words or phrases that come to your mind that might help you or your family members and friends to remember the events that were described in the chapters that were read: Matthew chapter 27, Mark chapter 15, Like chapter 23, and John chapter 19.

Well, what words or phrases have each of you come up with?
You know if we were in one of those virtual classes, we could see one another’s list, and we could discuss it together… but since we are not in a virtual classroom, we will need to do things in a more old fashioned way…
I guess you will each have your list and I will share mine okay?
Here we go. >>>>😊>>>>😊 are you ready?

Matthew Chapter 27
The people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death

Simon of Cyrene
Golgotha
Vinegar to drink mingled with gall
Parted his garments
Casting lots

Two thieves
Reviled him
Save thyself
He trusted in God
Son of God
Six hours of darkness
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me
Veil of the temple rent in twain
Graves were opened
Many bodies of Saints which slept arose
After his resurrection, went into the holy city, and appeared to many.
Many women were there
Mary Magdalene
Mary, mother of James & Joses
Joseph of Arimathaea
Begged the body of Jesus
Rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulcher
After three days I will rise again

And with him they crucify two thieves
And he was numbered with the transgressors
Save thyself and come down from the cross

He saved others; himself he cannot save
When the sixth hour was come, darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
The ninth hour Jesus cried…
Jesus cried with a loud voice and gave up the ghost.
The veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to bottom
Truly this man was the Son of God
Followed him and ministered unto him
Joseph of Arimathaea
Craved the body of Jesus

Art thou the King of the Jews?
I find no fault with this man
Herod
He answered him nothing
Set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe
Found no fault in this man

Nothing worthy of death is done unto him

I probably put too many words and phrases in my example, but I wanted to give you all a good sampling from each of the =
I probably put too many words and phrases in my example, but I wanted to give you all a good sampling from each of the books of scripture that we studied this past week. Next you might have each of your family members and friends write down some words that describe how they felt when they read about these events.

Ask each of your family members and friends to tell you why they felt the way they did as they were reading through the verses? If they cannot express their feelings in words let them draw their feelings out😊

Jesus Christ’s willingness to suffer shows His love for the Father and for all of us.
Now here’s an activity that we did in our Sunday School class that I thought you might want to do with your family members and friends, that will help each one of them to understand better how the accounts of the Savior’s death demonstrate His love. Okay here is how the activity went:

we were each given a paper heart and asked to write on our hearts a phrase from 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 that describes charity. If your children are young you might have them draw a picture of something that represents what they hear you read from the verses that sound like someone showing love for someone else.

1 Corinthians 13:4- 7                       New Testament
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

Doth not behave itself unseemlyseeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Some phrases for the first side of your heart might be –

In verse 4: charity sufferesth long; charity is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself; charity is not puffed up.

In verse 5: charity doth not behave itself unseemly; charity seeketh not her own; charity is not easily provoked; charity thinketh no evil.

In verse 6 Charity rejoiceth not in iniquity; charity rejoiceth in the truth.

Next we were asked to search through Matthew 27; Mark 15; Luke 23; or John 19 and write on the other side of our paper hearts a few of the verses that show how the Savior demonstrated the love described in the phrase that we chose from 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

You could have a sharing session of what each of your family members or friends found in their readings. Then ask them what experiences have helped them (your family members and friends) understand the Savior’s love?

I chose 1 Corinthians 13 verse 7 for my illustration, then I chose one verse from each chapter that might work with the things in verse 7. I may be totally wrong on this, but here I go, Okay, in verse 7 it Says that charity beareth all things; charity believeth all things; charity hopeth all things; and charity endureth all things.

Matthew 27
Mark 15
Luke 23
John 19
charity hopeth all things;
charity beareth all things;
charity endureth all things.
charity believeth all things
11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, aThou sayest.
And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he aanswered nothing.
34 Then asaid Jesus, Father, bforgive them; for they know not what cthey do. And they parted his draiment, and cast lots.
26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the adisciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, bWoman, behold thy son!
I think at this point Jesus may have had hope that the governor could change
Jesus knew the outcome from the beginning yet He bore it all
Jesus endured all things well, He even asked His ‘Father to forgive those who had persecuted Him,
Jesus believed that Peter would take care of His mother after His death,,

Okay, these are not perfect answers, but I hope they give you an idea of what you can do with your family and friends with this activity. I hope you all have fun digging just a little deeper into the scriptures😊 And of course I hope what I have done here is helpful to you and your family😊

you do not need to make a graph for this activity. This is only the way I chose to portray it for you. I thought it might be a little bit easier for you to grasp if you could visualize it in this way before you ventured out on your own to try it😊

The soldiers “plaited a crown of thorns, and put it about his head” (Mark 15:17). And they clothed him with purple, and plaited a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,

Here is a challenge for you for this week; Think about what you might do to encourage each of your family members and friends to share their testimonies about what they have learned during their study this week?
It may be good to find a hymn that describes the events that they have read about or their feelings about the Savior’s suffering and Crucifixion.

It might be well to sing one of these hymns with your family, if you have a wonderful singing voice – or I you are like me and cannot carry a tune in a bucket, you may want to find one of the hymns to play for them and they could sing along with the recording of the hymns. You can find the hymns here: https://www.ldshymns.com/
LDS Hymns Logo

You may even be able to find a recording on you tube, but i am not real sure. Actually you can find a few here on you tube :

Here’s a good question for you that we were asked in class: How do you think studying about the Savior’s final hours of His life inspire us to trust and follow Him? You could ask your family members and friends this same question😊 have them share their thoughts. I think this is a wonderful question to ponder on and even make a journal entry about.

You might want to encourage your family members and friends to journal about this question and write it down in their journal and then write their answers in their journal also, or they could draw pictures about the question and answer in their journal😊

Sometimes art can help people to visualize some of the events that they are studying about this week. You could show the following pictures to your family: one way to utilize these pictures with your family members and friends may be to take one picture at a time and look up the scripture references for that picture and read it  to themselves  or have someone read it to them as they study at the picture. This depend upon how many you have in your friends and family group and of course, their ages😊

If your children are younger you might have them look at the pictures and tell you what they think is happening in the pictures😊 you might be amazed at what they little one can tell you!  Then you can bring in the association of the action depicted in the picture together with the scripture reference so that when ever they read this particular verse or verses, they will associate that picture in their mind’s eye with the verse or verses,

Pictures of the persecution, suffering, and death of Jesus.
·         Pilate Washes His Hands (LDS.orgMatthew 27:11–25)
·         Christ with a Crown of Thorns (LDS.orgMatthew 27:26–31)
·         Jesus Carries His Cross (LDS.orgJohn 19:13–18)
·         The Crucifixion (LDS.org and Gospel Art Book, no. 57; Luke 23:33–46John 19:23–37)
·         Burial of Jesus (LDS.org and Gospel Art Book, no. 58; John 19:38–42)

You could discuss the meaning of the verses and then share how the particular picture helps them to better understand the verses that they (or you) read about the event depicted in the picture. It may be a bit difficult for you to discuss all of the events or details about the Savior’s last hours during one lesson.

Yo may even need one week if you have small children, you may need to go bite sized in your efforts. You may consider taking one picture a day and discussing the picture and reading the verses that go along with it. There are five pictures, so you could do one a day for five days and then do a review on Saturday over all of them together with your family members and friends😊

Here is an activity that you can do that can help you discuss the details that are most meaningful to those that you are teaching or sharing this lesson with. You might ask each family member or friend to choose a chapter from this week’s reading and spend a few minutes looking it over, reviewing it – looking for a word or a phrase, or a detail that teaches them something meaningful about the Savior and His mission. Let them take turns sharing what they have found and ask them to tell why it is meaningful to them.

Ideas for Personal Scripture Study

Jesus Christ’s willingness to suffer shows His love for the Father and for all of us.

Although the Savior had power to call down “legions of angels” (Matthew 26:53),

53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

He voluntarily chose to endure unjust trials, cruel mocking, and unimaginable physical pain. Why did He do it? “Because of his loving kindness,” Nephi testified, “and his long-suffering towards the children of men” (1 Nephi 19:9).

1 Nephi 19:9       Book of Mormon
And the world, because of their iniquity, shall judge him to be a thing of naught; wherefore they scourge him, and he suffereth it; and they smite him, and he suffereth it. Yea, they spit upon him, and he suffereth it, because of his loving kindness and his long-suffering towards the children of men.

You might begin your study of the Savior’s final hours by reading 1 Nephi 19:9

Where in Matthew 27Mark 15Luke 23; and John 19 do you find examples of each thing that Nephi said Jesus would suffer?

“[They] judge him to be a thing of naught”
“They scourge him”
“They smite him”
“They spit upon him”

Which passages help you feel the “loving kindness” of Heavenly Father and Jesus toward you? Which of the attributes demonstrated by the Savior are you inspired to develop more fully?

Another thing you could do is to share with your family members and friends the videos “Jesus Is Condemned before Pilate”  you can find this video here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/bible-videos/videos/jesus-is-condemned-before-pilate?lang=eng

and “Jesus Is Scourged and Crucified” (LDS.org). you can find this video here:  https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media-library/video/2011-10-019-jesus-is-scourged-and-crucified?lang=eng

Mocking of God’s truth should not weaken my faith.

While Jesus had endured mocking throughout His ministry, it grew more intense during His scourging and Crucifixion. But this mocking could not change the truth:

Jesus is the Son of God.

As you read about the humiliation Jesus endured, think about the opposition and mocking His work faces today. What insights do you gain about enduring opposition?

What impresses you about the centurion’s words in Matthew 27:54?

54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

Did Heavenly Father forsake Jesus on the cross?

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland offered the following insight: “I testify … that a perfect Father did not forsake His Son in that hour. …

Nevertheless, that the supreme sacrifice of His Son might be as complete as it was voluntary and solitary, the Father briefly withdrew from Jesus the comfort of His Spirit, the support of His personal presence. …

For [the Savior’s] Atonement to be infinite and eternal, He had to feel what it was like to die not only physically but spiritually, to sense what it was like to have the divine Spirit withdraw, leaving one feeling totally, abjectly, hopelessly alone” (“None Were with Him,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2009, 87–88).

You can read or listen to this talk here:

The Savior is our example of forgiveness.

How do you feel when you read the Savior’s words in Luke 23:34?
Luke 23:34           New Testament
34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

(see the insight provided by the Joseph Smith Translation in footnote c).
JST Luke 23:35 … they do (Meaning the soldiers who crucified him,) …

JST, Luke 23:35                  Joseph Smith Translation
35 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do (Meaning the soldiers who crucified him,) and they parted his raiment and cast lots.

Referring to the Savior’s words, President Henry B. Eyring taught: “We must forgive and bear no malice toward those who offend us.

The Savior set the example from the cross. … We do not know the hearts of those who offend us”

(“That We May Be One,” Ensign, May 1998, 68). How can this verse help you if you have trouble forgiving someone?

What is the meaning of “paradise” in the Savior’s statement to the thief?

In the scriptures, the word paradise usually means “a place of peace and happiness in the postmortal spirit world”a place reserved for the righteous.

The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that the word paradise in Luke 23:43 “is a mistranslation; the Lord actually said that the thief would be with Him in the world of spirits”

(True to the Faith, 111; see also Joseph Smith, Journal, June 11, 1843, josephsmithpapers.org). In the spirit world, the thief would hear the gospel preached.

TRUE TO THE FAITH

True to the Faith                    Paradise
In the scriptures, the word paradise is used in different ways. First, it designates a place of peace and happiness in the postmortal spirit world, reserved for those who have been baptized and who have remained faithful (see Alma 40:12Moroni 10:34).

12 And now, there was no means to reclaim men from this fallen state, which man had brought upon himself because of his own disobedience;

34 And now I bid unto all, farewell. I soon go to rest in the paradise of God, until my spirit and body shall again reunite, and I am brought forth triumphant through the air, to meet you before the pleasing bar of the great Jehovah, the Eternal Judge of both quick and dead. Amen.

Those in spirit prison have the opportunity to learn the gospel of Jesus Christ, repent of their sins, and receive the ordinances of baptism and confirmation through the work we do in temples (see D&C 138:30–35).

When they do, they may enter paradise.
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/138?lang=eng

A second use of the word paradise is found in Luke’s account of the Savior’s Crucifixion. When Jesus was on the cross, a thief who also was being crucified said, “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom” (Luke 23:42).

According to Luke 23:43, the Lord replied, “Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.” The Prophet Joseph Smith explained that this is a mistranslation; the Lord actually said that the thief would be with Him in the world of spirits.

The word paradise is also found in 2 Corinthians 12:4, where it probably refers to the celestial kingdom. In the tenth article of faith, the word paradisiacal describes the earth’s glory in the Millennium.

Ancient prophets foresaw the Savior’s suffering and Crucifixion.

Our instructor told us that it may be helpful and strengthen the faith of our family members and friends to know that the ancient prophets foretold of many of the events in the Savior’s final hours.

One way to help your family members and friends review these prophecies and see just how they were fulfilled would be to give each person one or more of the scriptures on the following list:

Ancient prophecies about the trial and death of Jesus Christ.

·         Isaiah 53:5, 7
·         1 Nephi 19:9
·         Isaiah 50:6
·         Psalm 69:21
·         Psalm 22:16
·         1 Nephi 19:10
·         Psalm 22:18
·         Isaiah 53:9, 12
·         Psalm 22:7–8
·         Psalm 22:1
·         Isaiah 53:9

Then you could ask them to find the verses in Matthew chapter 27 that shows how the scriptures were fulfilled. You could even make a chart for a good visual – If you haven’t figured it out yet, I try to use as many of my senses as I can to teach as well as to learn because the learning sticks better that way😊

Okay so make a chart with your family members and friends helping you. This chart would be one that matches the prophecies with their fulfillments.

You could have your family members and friends write the verses that contain the prophecies in the margins of their scriptures in Matthew chapter 27.

Next you could ask them the following questions: What do we learn from these prophecies? How do these prophecies strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ?

Opposition cannot stop the work of God.

You know as well as I do, that some of your family members and friends or you yourself, have faced opposition – maybe they were judged harshly for something or mocked or made fun of when they expressed their beliefs or tried to live their faith. Maybe they were ostracized to an extent because of their different opinions. because of their belief in Jesus Christ:(

Some times opposition can be somewhat painful doe some people. And sometimes it can be very embarrassing for someone as they face opposition.

If it is not too painful or embarrassing for them, you might have them share their experiences with the rest of the group as to when this has happened to them. They might tell how they responded when it happened.

Next you can read some of these verses with your family members and friends from Matthew chapter 27; Mark chapter 15; Luck chapter 23; and John chapter 10 describing the persecution the Savior faced during His last hours on the earth.

Make it personal ad remember that He suffered for each one of us for our own individual ins and transgressions.

And now more questions for you to ask and answer: what kinds of opposition does God’s work face today> what can we learn from the Savior’s response that can help us face any of the opposition we have or my face in our day?

Some other scriptures that can help each of us when we face opposition include the following: Matthew 5:10Romans 12:142 Timothy 3:10–12Alma 1:19–28; and 3 Nephi 12:10–12. What do we learn from these verses?

The Savior offers us hope and forgiveness.
It just might be helpful for you to read with your family members and friends the account of the Savior asking the Father to forgive the soldiers and offering hope to the thief on the cross . If you think this would be helpful for your family members and friends to learn about this event, you may consider dividing them into two groups and assigning them some verses to read.

The first group could read Luke 23:34-38 (including verse 34, footnote c, which provides insight from the Joseph Smith Translation).

34  Then asaid Jesus, Father, bforgive them; for they know not what cthey do. And they parted his draiment, and cast lots.

JST, Luke 23:35                Joseph Smith Translation
35 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do (Meaning the soldiers who crucified him,) and they parted his raiment and cast lots.

The second group could read Luke 23: 39-43. Next have family members and friends from each group discus what they learn about the Savior from these verses within their group. Then have them share their thoughts with the family members and friends from the other group.

Ask the whole group. How can we follow the Savior’s example? If you or any of your family members or friends are having trouble forgiving others and following the example of our Savior in these verses, you could consider sharing this statement from Elder Jeffrey R. Holland:

The Savior’s example of forgiveness.
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland taught:
“Closely related to our own obligation to repent is the generosity of letting others do the samewe are to forgive even as we are forgiven. In this we participate in the very essence of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Surely the most majestic moment of that fateful Friday, when nature convulsed and the veil of the temple was rent, was that unspeakably merciful moment when Christ said, ‘Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.’ As our advocate with the Father, He is still making that same plea todayin your behalf and in mine.

“Here, as in all things, Jesus set the standard for us to follow. Life is too short to be spent nursing animosities. … We don’t want God to remember our sins, so there is something fundamentally wrong in our relentlessly trying to remember those of others” (“The Peaceable Things of the Kingdom,” Ensign, Nov. 1996, 83).

You can read or listen to this talk here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/1996/11/the-peaceable-things-of-the-kingdom?lang=eng

In order to give encouragement to your family members and friends for them to continue studying their scriptures and keeping up with their Sunday school class as well as your family scripture lessons. You might ask them to think about what they would say to someone if they said, “I need to see to believe.” If we read our scriptures for our next week’s lesson in Matthew Chapter 28; Mark chapter 16; Luke chapter 24; and John chapters 20 – 21 we will find that these questions will be addressed in them😊

Well, my dear Family and Friends again we are at the end of our lesson and my post, yes here we are again😊 And as I do each time I share with you, I hope and pray that I have shared something with you that may have uplifted you in some small way – or even in a big way😊 that’s okay too!

Or that you may have a desire because of my sharing this lesson with you to learn more about our Savior’s last hours of His mortal life and the lessons that He taught us during those last hours. We can learn so much about Jesus Christ and His earthly ministry here: https://www.comeuntochrist.org/beliefs/jesus-christ/life-of-jesus-christ

Or maybe  you may even have a desire to make some changes in your life so that you can come closer to your Savior and learn about His church that is upon the earth now just as He had it upon the earth when He was here all those years ago. If you want to learn more about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, you can go here: https://www.comeuntochrist.org/

And as always, please remember who you are, you are each a son or daughter or God. He and His Son, Jesus Christ know you, They - (Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ) love you more that you can ever imagine. They know your needs. They want to help you navigate through your mortal life. To help you, to guide and direct you as you go along your way back to live with Them again eternally😊

Remember to keep the commandments, say your prayers, and please do continue studying the New Testament with us😊 Forgive those whom your need to forgive – you can forgive with the Lord’s help. U know this to be true as I have experienced it for myself on several occasions since joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is truly amazing all the things we can accomplish with His help😊 Until my next post, please make it a good week, won’t you?
