Follow Me – Week # 4 -- January 20–26. 1 Nephi 11–15: “Armed with
Righteousness and the Power of God”
Dear Family and
Friends
I hope you are not
experiencing this frigid weather wherever you are at this moment. We have had a
few below zero days here😊 Still jacket weather for me though
because I cannot find a coat that will fit over my arm with lymphedema . As it got so
big last year, and my physical therapist said that she could not get it any smaller
after months of therapy 3 days a week and being wrapped from my fingertips
clear up to my shoulder.
I ended up having to
have a sleeve special ordered to fit my arm at its then current size. I hope
that it does not stay at this size, but if so that is just fine because I know
that it could always be worse😊
It is okay though because I do not work outside😊 so I only go from the house to the car, then from the car to work and reverse order in the evening after work unless I need to get gasoline or go to the store for one thing or another.

So, if you ever need
to have Lymph nodes removes, take care of yourself and know that you may
possibly develop lymphedema at some point after your surgery. Remember if this
happens and you end up needing to wear a compression sleeve f some type – it needs
replaced at least every 6 months, it is not an option!
Also, if you notice your
sleeve is not keeping the swelling down, please see your doctor for a referral
to your physical therapist😊
Hey, here I am rambling
again!!! I guess we should get on to our lesson for next week.Make sure that you read through all of the chapters as they contain so much information, mor than i cn put in my post😊
Okay, are you
all ready??? You got your scriptures and your journal handy? Pens and / or
pencils? Alright then, off we go. For this next week we will be studying 1
Nephi Chapters 11 – 1-15.
Before your family
study time you may want to consider writing the following questions on a poster
board😊
- What are the Apostasy and the Restoration?
- Why is the Book of Mormon necessary?
- How can I know the truths of God for myself?
These are some questions that you and your family members and friends may want to think about and ponder upon as you study these chapters as they contain principles that you might consider as you share the gospel with others. Can you see yourself in 1 Nephi 11–15? What passages are of most value to you and your family members and friends?
After
you have studied these chapters with your family and friends you might want to
have a discussion to find out what you and / or they found during your/their study
of these chapters in 1 Nephi.
So be sure that you have your poster board with the questions ready to show everyone that is there in our family study group😊 This next section comes from the Come, Follow Me for Individuals and Families manual:

The Apostle John saw the history of the world and the Savior’s Second Coming (see the book of Revelation). Joseph Smith saw the Father and the Son (see Joseph Smith—History 1:17–18). Lehi saw a vision that portrayed the journey we must make toward the Savior and His love.
As recorded in 1 Nephi 11–14, Nephi saw the ministry of the Savior, the future of Lehi’s posterity in the promised land, and the latter-day destiny of God’s work. This vision helped to prepare Nephi for the work that lay ahead of him, and it can also help prepare you—for God has a work for you to do in His kingdom. You are among “the saints of the church of the Lamb” seen by Nephi, “who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory” (1 Nephi 14:14).
God
sent Jesus Christ as an expression of His love.
You know that it was
an angel that showed Nephi the symbols and the events from the Savior’s life
that demonstrate the love of God. It could be very helpful for you to take a
good look at these symbols and these events of the Saviors life with your
family members and friends. You might have a good discussion talking about how
these things each demonstrate God’s love for each one of us as well😊
Bible Videos: The
Life of Jesus Christ – there are over 100 videos to choose from😊you
could have a marathon Sunday with your family watching these videos together
and learning about the life of Jesus Christ—don’t forget the popcorn or other
wonderful treats😊here is a question for you all to think
about as you are watching your choice of these videos:
How do the Savior’s life
and Atonement help you understand God’s love for you? So
please be sure to check them out Here:

God sent Jesus Christ as an expression of His love.
To help Nephi understand the meaning of the tree that his father
had seen, an angel showed him “the Son of the Eternal Father” (1 Nephi 11:21).
This led Nephi to conclude that the tree represents the love of God.
But the vision wasn’t over yet. As you read and ponder 1 Nephi 11, what do you find that helps you understand why Jesus Christ is the ultimate expression of God’s love?
But the vision wasn’t over yet. As you read and ponder 1 Nephi 11, what do you find that helps you understand why Jesus Christ is the ultimate expression of God’s love?
To learn about other symbols in Lehi’s dream, see 1 Nephi
11:35–36; 12:16–18;
and 15:21–30.
See also John 3:16.
John
3:16 New Testament
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
God
will help us resist Satan’s influence.
Sometimes you and /
or your family members and friends may feel like the people that are in Nephi’s
vision. You know those ones who were wandering around in mists of darkness or
those who were facing the scorn of those other people who were in the large and
spacious building
A couple of questions
you might ask of yourself and/ or your family members and friends could be. The
following: Why mists of darkness are a good symbol for temptation—we find this
mentioned in 1 Nephi 12:17?
1 Nephi
12:17 Book of Mormon
17 And the mists of darkness are the temptations of the devil, which blindeth the eyes, and hardeneth the hearts of the children of
men, and leadeth them away into broad roads, that they perish and are lost.
and Why the large and spacious building is a
good symbol for the vain imaginations and pride of the world, mentioned in 1 Nephi 12:18?
1 Nephi
12:18 Book of Mormon
18 And the large
and spacious building, which thy father saw, is vain imaginations and the pride of the children of men. And a great and a terrible gulf divideth them; yea, even the word of the justice of the Eternal God, and the Messiah who is the Lamb of
God, of whom the Holy Ghost beareth record, from the beginning of the world
until this time, and from this time henceforth and forever.
This next part might be a bit much if you have younger children in your family study group, then you may want to go chapter by chapter or even smaller bite sized sections. Do whichever works best for your family study group dynamics 😊 if it works for you, you could divide the following chapters 12–15 up among your family members and friends.
Once you have divided
your family study group into small groups or pairs ask your family members and
friends to search through their assigned chapters for verses that teach how God
will help us overcome temptation, vanity, and pride for instance, are found in the following verses: 1 Nephi 13:34–40; 14:14.
1 Nephi
13:34–40 Book of Mormon
34 And it came to
pass that the angel of the Lord spake unto me, saying: Behold, saith the Lamb
of God, after I have visited the remnant of the house of Israel—and this remnant of whom I
speak is the seed of thy father—wherefore, after I have visited them in
judgment, and smitten them by the hand of the Gentiles, and after the Gentiles
do stumble exceedingly, because of the most plain and precious
parts of the gospel of the Lamb which have been kept back by that
abominable church, which is the mother of harlots, saith the Lamb—I will be merciful
unto the Gentiles in that day, insomuch that I will bring forth unto them, in mine own power, much of my gospel, which shall be plain and precious, saith the Lamb.
35 For, behold,
saith the Lamb: I will manifest myself unto thy seed, that they shall write
many things which I shall minister unto them, which shall be plain and precious;
and after thy seed shall be destroyed, and dwindle in unbelief, and also the
seed of thy brethren, behold, these things shall be hid up, to come forth unto the Gentiles,
by the gift and power of the Lamb.
38 And it came to pass that I beheld the remnant of the seed of my brethren, and also the book of the Lamb of God, which had proceeded forth from the mouth of the Jew, that it came forth from the Gentiles unto the remnant of the seed of my brethren.
39 And after it
had come forth unto them I beheld other books, which came forth by the power of the Lamb, from the
Gentiles unto them, unto the convincing of the Gentiles and the remnant of the seed of my
brethren, and also the Jews who were scattered upon all the face of the earth,
that the records of the prophets and of the twelve apostles of the Lamb are true.
40 And the angel
spake unto me, saying: These last records, which thou hast seen among the Gentiles, shall establish the truth of the first, which are of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, and shall make known the plain
and precious things which have been taken away from them; and shall make known
to all kindreds, tongues, and people, that the Lamb of God is the Son of the
Eternal Father, and the Savior of the world; and that all men must come unto him, or
they cannot be saved.
1 Nephi
14:14 Book of Mormon
14 And it came to
pass that I, Nephi, beheld the power of the Lamb of God, that it descended upon
the saints of the church of the Lamb, and upon the covenant people of the Lord,
who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were armed with righteousness and with the power of God in great glory.
Here is a good question for you: How can you help your family members and friends to better understand the power that comes from the word of God? You can look in 1 Nephi 15:24, I believe this is a pretty good statement of the power found in the scriptures😊
- 24 And I said unto them that it was the word of God; and whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish; either could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction.
Do you see the
promise in there? That if we would continually
“hearken
unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it,” we “
would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the
adversary overpower” us “unto blindness, to lead them away to
destruction”.
It could be helpful
for you and your family and friends if you opened up your discussion with
questions like the following: What did Nephi learn about the power of God’s
word? How does Satan try to undermine the word of God? Look for answers in 1 Nephi
13:26–29.
1 Nephi
13:26–29 Book of Mormon
26 And after they
go forth by the hand of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, from the Jews unto the Gentiles, thou seest the formation of that great and abominable church, which is most abominable above all other churches; for
behold, they have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord
have they taken away.
27 And all this
have they done that they might pervert the right ways of the Lord, that they
might blind the eyes and harden the hearts of the children of men.
28 Wherefore, thou
seest that after the book hath gone forth through the hands of the great and
abominable church, that there are many plain and precious things taken away from the book, which is the book of
the Lamb of God.
29 And after these plain and precious things were taken away it goeth forth unto all the nations of the Gentiles; and after it goeth forth unto all the nations of the Gentiles, yea, even across the many waters which thou hast seen with the Gentiles which have gone forth out of captivity, thou seest—because of the many plain and precious things which have been taken out of the book, which were plain unto the understanding of the children of men, according to the plainness which is in the Lamb of God—because of these things which are taken away out of the gospel of the Lamb, an exceedingly great many do stumble, yea, insomuch that Satan hath great power over them.
What did the Lord and
His prophets do to preserve His word? What do you and your family members and
friends do to make the word of God a part of your daily lives – individually and
as a family? This next section comes from the Come, Follow Me for

The Lord prepared the way for the Restoration.
Nephi would never live to witness much of what he saw in his
vision. Why do you think it was valuable for Nephi to know these things? Why is
it valuable for you to know these things? Maybe you
could ask this question each time you read about something Nephi saw in his
vision.
Here are some of the events Nephi saw: the future of his people
(see chapter 12),
the colonizing of the Americas and the American Revolution (see chapter 13:12–19),
the Great Apostasy (see chapter 13:20–29),
and the Restoration of the gospel (see chapter 13:32–42).
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/13?lang=eng1 Nephi 13
The
Lord prepared the way for the Restoration of His Church.
You may want to turn
your poster board over and make a timeline. Maybe it would help you and your
family members and friends to better understand Nephi’s vision of the events of
the Restoration.
It’s possible that
you and your family members and friends may want to make one timeline with
events that you can find together.
They are described
in 1 Nephi 13. Which of these events have already
taken place? Which are happening now? You may want to consider sharing the
following quotation by George Washington, first president of the United Stated,
which shows that he recognized the influence of God in the American Revolution,
which was an event that helped prepare the way for the Restoration.
God’s
hand in the American Revolution.
George Washington
said: “The man must be bad indeed who can look upon the events of the American
Revolution without feeling the warmest gratitude towards the great Author of
the Universe whose divine interposition was so frequently manifest in our
behalf” (Letter to Samuel Langdon, Sept. 28, 1789,
founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/05-04-02-0070).
So, you might want to ask your family members and friends the following questions: How would you and your family members and friends use 1 Nephi 13 to explain to someone of another faith why the Restoration was necessary? One example could be in 1 Nephi 13:26–29, 35–42.
1 Nephi 13:26–29, 35–42 Book of Mormon
26 And after they
go forth by the hand of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, from the Jews unto the Gentiles, thou seest the formation of that great and abominable church, which is most abominable above all other churches; for

27 And all this
have they done that they might pervert the right ways of the Lord, that they
might blind the eyes and harden the hearts of the children of men.
28 Wherefore, thou

and after it goeth forth unto all the nations of the Gentiles, yea, even across
the many waters which thou hast seen with the Gentiles which have gone forth
out of captivity, thou seest—because of the many plain and precious things
which have been taken out of the book, which were plain
unto the understanding of the children of men, according to the plainness which
is in the Lamb of God—because of these things which are taken away out of
the gospel of the Lamb, an exceedingly great many do stumble, yea, insomuch
that Satan hath great power over them.
35 For, behold,
saith the Lamb: I will manifest myself unto thy seed, that they shall write many

after thy seed shall be destroyed, and dwindle in unbelief, and also the seed
of thy brethren, behold, these things shall be hid up, to come forth unto the Gentiles,
by the gift and power of the Lamb.
37 And
blessed are they who shall seek to bring forth my Zion at that day, for they shall have the gift and the power of the Holy Ghost; and if they endure unto the end they shall be lifted up at the last day, and shall be saved in the everlasting
kingdom of the Lamb; and whoso shall publish peace, yea, tidings of great joy, how beautiful upon
the mountains shall they be.
38 And it came to
pass that I beheld the remnant of the seed of my brethren, and also the book of the Lamb of
God, which had proceeded forth from the mouth of the Jew, that it came forth
from the Gentiles unto the remnant of the
seed of my brethren.
39 And
after it had come forth unto them I beheld other books, which came forth
by the power of the Lamb, from the Gentiles unto them, unto the convincing of the
Gentiles and the remnant of the seed of my brethren, and also the Jews who were

to all kindreds, tongues, and people, that the Lamb of God is the Son of the
Eternal Father, and the Savior of the world; and that all men must come unto him, or
they cannot be saved.
41 And they must
come according to the words which shall be established by the mouth of the
Lamb; and the words of the Lamb shall be made known in the records of thy
seed, as well as in the records of the twelve apostles of the Lamb; wherefore they
both shall be established in one; for there is one God and one Shepherd over all the earth.
42 And the time
cometh that he shall manifest himself unto all nations, both unto the Jews and also unto the Gentiles; and after he has manifested
himself unto the Jews and also unto the Gentiles, then he shall manifest
himself unto the Gentiles and also unto the Jews, and the last shall be first, and the first shall be last.
You and your family members
and friends might benefit and have some fun from role-playing with one another how
they would explain to someone the need for the Restoration and how it has blessed
you in your life or your family members and friends in their lives. This

What is the “great and abominable church” that Nephi
saw?
Elder Dallin H. Oaks explained that the “great and abominable
church” described by Nephi represents “any philosophy or organization that
opposes belief in God. And the ‘captivity’ into which this ‘church’ seeks to
bring the saints will not be so much physical confinement as the captivity of
false ideas” (“Stand as Witnesses
of God,” Ensign, Mar.
2015, 32). https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/2015/03/stand-as-witnesses-of-god?lang=eng
Who was the man Nephi saw whom the Spirit “wrought
upon” to go “forth upon the many waters”?
Nephi saw that the Holy Ghost would inspire Christopher Columbus to
make his famous voyage to the Americas. On March 14, 1493, Columbus wrote
of this voyage: “These great and marvelous results are not to be attributed to
any merit of mine … ; for that which the unaided intellect of man
could not compass, the Spirit of God has granted to human exertions, for God is
wont to hear the prayers of His servants who love His precepts even to the
performance of apparent impossibilities” (The Annals of America
[Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc., 1976], 1:5).
The
Book of Mormon teaches plain and precious truths.
Hey, have you ever
thought about why we need The Book of Mormon? It may be helpful to use 1 Nephi

To begin a discussion
with your family and friends about why we need the Book of Mormon. Now you and
your family members and friends could list some of the “plain and precious
things” that were lost from the Bible and that have been restored through the
Book of Mormon. You can search in verses 26
and 39
26 And after they go forth by the hand of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, from the Jews unto the Gentiles, thou seest the formation of that great and abominable church, which is most abominable above all other churches; for behold, they have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord have they taken away.

Or use the following lists from President Russell M. Nelson:
President Russell M. Nelson’s Book of Mormon lists.
From “The Book of Mormon: What Would Your Life Be Like without It?” (Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2017, 60–63). https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/2015/03/stand-as-witnesses-of-god?lang=eng
The Book of Mormon refutes notions that:
- Revelation ended with the Bible.
- Infants need to be baptized.
- Happiness can be found in wickedness.
- Individual goodness is adequate for exaltation (ordinances and covenants are needed).
- The Fall of Adam tainted mankind with “original sin.”
The Book of Mormon
clarifies understanding about:
- Our premortal existence.
- Death. It is a necessary component of God’s great plan of happiness.
- Postmortal existence, which begins in paradise.
- How the resurrection of the body, reunited with its spirit, becomes an immortal soul.
- How our judgment by the Lord will be according to our deeds and the desires of our hearts.
- How ordinances are properly performed: for example, baptism, sacrament, conferring the Holy Ghost.
- The Atonement of Jesus Christ.
- The Resurrection.
- The important role of angels.
- The eternal nature of priesthood.
- How human behavior is influenced more by the power of the word than the power of the sword.
A good question to ask your family members and friends: Do you want to share how these restored “plain and precious things” have helped you to become closer to God. You should remind your family members and friends that it is the Spirit that can help each one of us to discover the “plain and precious things” for ourselves😊
You may
want to consider showing the video of the talk “The Book of Mormon—a Book from God”
(ChurchofJesusChrist.org), by Tad
R. Callister Of the Presidency of the Seventy, you can find it here:
Then you could ask
your family members and friends to share what this video teaches about why we
need the Book of Mormon. Or you could ask your family members and friends to
draw on the poster board the illustration described in the following quotation
by Elder Tad R. Callister:
We
need the Book of Mormon.
Elder Tad R.
Callister taught:
“The Bible is one
witness of Jesus Christ; the Book of Mormon is another. Why is this second
witness so crucial? The following illustration may help: How many straight
lines can you draw through a single point on a piece of paper? The answer is infinite. For a moment, suppose that single point represents the Bible and that hundreds of those straight lines drawn through that point represent different interpretations of the Bible and that each of those interpretations represents a different church.
“What happens,
however, if on that piece of paper there is a second point representing the
Book of Mormon? How many straight lines could you draw between these two
reference points: the Bible and the Book of Mormon? Only one.
Only one interpretation of Christ’s doctrines survives the testimony of these two witnesses” (“The Book of Mormon—a Book from God,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2011, 75). https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2011/10/the-book-of-mormon-a-book-from-god?lang=eng

Latter-day scripture restores “plain and precious
things.”
Nephi saw in vision that the Bible—which he described as “a record of the Jews”—would have “many plain and precious things taken away from [it]” (1 Nephi 13:23, 28).
However, he also saw that God would restore these things through “other books”—the Book of Mormon and other latter-day scripture (see 1 Nephi 13:39–40).
However, he also saw that God would restore these things through “other books”—the Book of Mormon and other latter-day scripture (see 1 Nephi 13:39–40).
What are some of the precious truths that the Book of Mormon helps us better understand? How is your life different because these plain and precious things have been restored?

Truths,” Ensign, Mar.

I feel so fortunate and very grateful to my Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ for providing the Book of Mormon. I feel like the Book of Mormon clarifies many things in the Old and the New Testaments. The Book of Mormon is indeed another testament of Jesus Christ, it contains the fulness of His Gospel.
From it we
can learn what we need to know to return to our Heavenly home😊
The Book
of Mormon restores those missing ‘plain and precious things’ that were
taken
away from the scriptures. as we study the Book of Mormon along with our
other scriptures we can remove those stumbling blocks that are spoken of😊

4:8 Book of Mormon
8 Behold, great
and marvelous are the works of the Lord. How unsearchable are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should find
out all his ways. And no man knoweth of his ways save it be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren,
despise not the revelations of God.

46 Behold, I say
unto you they are made known unto me by the Holy Spirit of God. Behold, I have fasted and prayed many days that I might know these things of

21 And now behold,

Yea, he that repenteth and exerciseth faith, and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually without ceasing—unto such it is
given to know the mysteries of God; yea, unto such it shall be given to reveal things which never have been revealed; yea, and it shall
be given unto such to bring thousands of souls to repentance, even as it has
been given unto us to bring these our brethren to repentance.

Ideas for Family Scripture
Study and Family Home Evening
As you read the scriptures with your family, the Spirit can help
you know what principles to emphasize and discuss in order to meet the needs of
your family. Here are some ideas.
To help family members understand the value of the “plain and
precious” truths in the Book of Mormon, compare a clearly written message to a
scrambled message.
Why might Heavenly Father want His truths to be taught clearly? Family members might bear testimony of some “plain and precious” truths they have learned from the Book of Mormon.
Why might Heavenly Father want His truths to be taught clearly? Family members might bear testimony of some “plain and precious” truths they have learned from the Book of Mormon.
Why are we “armed with righteousness and with the power of God”
when we live true to our covenants with God?
What experiences can your family share when they have “inquired of
the Lord”? What do we learn from Nephi’s example?

each time that we read them. At least that has been my experience😊
I am a slow learner though so your experience will of course be much different from mine. We all do still learn line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little.’ 😊😊😊
So please don't give up if you feel as though you are not learning enough or feel like you are not learning fast enough. The Lord knows when we are each ready to receive more light and knowledge, please keep prayerful during your study😊
The readings for this
next week contain an account that can inspire you and your family members and
friends an possibly help you and each one of them whenever you or they might be
required to do something that seems quite impossible for you or them to
accomplish, so I encourage you and your family members to read 1 Nephi
16–22
during the coming week😊
Don’t forget that if you do not have a Book of Mormon of your own to study with me you can receive one here: https://www.comeuntochrist.org/
It has been through
my own experience that i know that the Book of Mormon helps me draw nearer to my Lord and
Savior, Jesus Christ. This sacred Book of Scripture is comparable to the Old
and the New Testaments.
Whenever I read this wonderful book, I feel so much
peace and whenever I read and study it along with the Old and the New Testaments,
they become clearer in so many ways😊
I want to encourage each one of you to continue studying along with me😊 I believe that as you study the Book of Mormon things will be made clearer to you as well!

As always, please do remember who you are!!! You are each one a child of God!!! 😊 please continue with your prayers every day – morning and night and have a prayer in your heart throughout the day😊Be sure to ask your Father in heaven in your prayers if the Book of Mormon is indeed another Testament of His Son, Jesus Christ?
I believe that as you continue to study the
Book of Mormon along with me and all of our cyber study buddies you will find thing
in your life become clearer an you will feel the peace that I feel😊 This is my prayer for each one of you. Until my next post, please make it a
spectacular week😊
