New Year’s Resolutions / Goals for 2020
Dear Family
and Friends
I wanted to share some inspiration with you about setting goals or making resolutions for the new year. I found this article with some quotes for you to embrace that may help you out with your resolution / goal settingπ this was written back in December, but it still may be helpful to you in some small way. Maybe you are just getting started – like meπ
Setting a New Year's Resolution? Here are 31 Quotes for January 2020 to Help You Achieve Your Goals
The year 2020 is fast approaching
and with it, those New Year’s resolutions.
Whether you’ve decided to run a
marathon, write a book, or start a business, a new decade is nearly here and
with it—let’s be honest—perhaps an impending sense of dread at actually
accomplishing those goals you’ve set.
You're not alone. According to New
York Times writer Harry Guinness, we sometimes get a little ahead of the
game and make lofty goals at New Year’s that are, well, somewhat unattainable.
And the stats don’t lie—80 percent of people fail to keep their New Year’s
resolutions for more than six weeks, petering
out around the middle of February.
So, we’re all in agreement—starting
new habits can be hard. How do we make those goals become a reality?
First things first: Make sure
your goal is something you enjoy. And while you’re at it, give yourself
an immediate reward—those who treat themselves for sticking to something
are more likely to have that habit stick to them, Business Insider
notes.
Why not start practicing your New
Year’s resolutions right now? That way January 1 won’t feel like such a
daunting number, Guinness writes, and you can adjust your goals to be more
fitting for when the clock strikes midnight and the new year rolls in.
But even the best of plans can be
difficult to carry out. Need a little extra motivation for the days ahead?
Here
are 31 quotes from leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
for every day in January to keep your focus on the Savior so you can stay
uplifted and inspired to run that extra mile, take up that new hobby, read your
scriptures more consistently, or to simply be a little kinder.
So, go on. Beat the odds. Prove that you can keep that
resolution and make 2020 a year to remember

increase.
As you seek to follow your Savior, your confidence will grow.

you walk in faithfulness and open your heart to the Light of Christ, your love
of God will mature and your ability to love your neighbor will be refined.” — Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Creating
S.M.A.R.T. Goals
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Timely
Specific: A specific goal has a much
greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. To set a specific
goal you must answer the six “W” questions:
*Who: Who
is involved?
*What: What
do I want to accomplish?
*Where: Identify
a location.
*When: Establish
a time frame.
*Which: Identify requirements and constraints.
*Why: Specific
reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.
EXAMPLE:
A general goal would be, “Get in shape.” But a specific goal would say, “Join a
health club and workout 3 days a week.”
Measurable
- Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of
each goal you set.
When
you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and
experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued
effort required to reach your goal.
To
determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions such as……
How
much? How many?
How
will I know when it is accomplished?
Attainable
– When you identify goals that are most important to you, you begin to figure
out ways you can make them come true.
You develop the attitudes, abilities,
skills, and financial capacity to reach them. You begin seeing previously
overlooked opportunities to bring yourself closer to the achievement of your
goals.
You
can attain most any goal you set when you plan your steps wisely and establish
a time frame that allows you to carry out those steps.
Goals that may have
seemed far away and out of reach eventually move closer and become attainable,
not because your goals shrink, but because you grow and expand to match them.
When you list your goals you build your self-image. You see yourself as worthy
of these goals, and develop the traits and personality that allow you to
possess them.
Realistic-
To be realistic, a goal must represent an objective toward which you are both willing
and able to work.
A goal can be both high and realistic; you are the
only one who can decide just how high your goal should be. But be sure that
every goal represents substantial progress.
A high
goal is frequently easier to reach than a low one because a low goal exerts low
motivational force.
Some of the hardest jobs you ever accomplished actually
seem easy simply because they were a labor of love.
Timely
– A goal should be grounded within a time frame.
With no time frame tied to it
there’s no sense of urgency.
If you want to lose 10 lbs, when do you want to
lose it by? “Someday” won’t work.
But if you anchor it within a timeframe, “by
May 1st”, then you’ve set your unconscious mind into motion to begin working on
the goal.
Your goal is probably realistic if you truly believe that it can be accomplished.
Additional ways to know if your goal is realistic is to determine
if you have accomplished anything similar in the past or ask yourself what
conditions would have to exist to accomplish this goal.
T can
also stand for Tangible – A goal is tangible when you can experience it with
one of the senses, that is, taste, touch, smell, sight or hearing.
When
your goal is tangible you have a better chance of making it specific and
measurable and thus attainable.

Hymn
1.
Improve the shining moments;
Don’t let them pass you by. Work while the sun is radiant; Work, for the night draws nigh. We cannot bid the sunbeams To lengthen out their stay, Nor can we ask the shadow To ever stay away. |
3.
As wintertime doth follow
The pleasant summer days, So may our joys all vanish And pass far from our gaze. Then should we not endeavor Each day some point to gain, That we may here be useful And ev’ry wrong disdain? |
2.
Time flies on wings of lightning;
We cannot call it back. It comes, then passes forward Along its onward track. And if we are not mindful, The chance will fade away, For life is quick in passing. ‘Tis as a single day. |
4.
Improve each shining moment.
In this you are secure, For promptness bringeth safety And blessings rich and pure. Let prudence guide your actions; Be honest in your heart; And God will love and bless you And help to you impart. |
Lesson
*Suitable for All Ages*
Begin by watching this video. Before you play it, ask everyone to
think about how this video related to goal-setting. ‘A Work in Progress’
Ask:
What does this video teach us about goal-setting? Why is it important?
Read aloud:
At the start of a new year, many people make resolutions.
While these
resolutions often don’t last, goal setting is an important gospel principle
.
Elder
Russell M. Ballard once said, “I am so thoroughly convinced that if we don’t
set goals in our life and learn how to master the techniques of living to reach
our goals, we can reach a ripe old age and look back on our life only to see
that we reached but a small part of our full potential.”
Learning
how to make and keep goals isn’t easy. We often have to make goals to make
goals.
Ask:
What are some goals you have made and achieved? What helped you keep those
goals?
Read aloud:
One common tool used by people around the world to set goals is called the
SMART method.
Write the following out and describe each step:
Specific – the goal should have a specific purpose and a specific end
Measurable – you should be able to measure your goals in some tangible way
Agreed
– family goals (or any sort of group goal) should be made together and
unanimous
Realistic – your goals should be achievable with the tools you have
Time-Based – you should be able to achieve or reach your goals in a set time
frame
Finish the lesson by discussing how goals help us become more like
God. Share any personal experiences that may relate. Complete the goal setting
activity below.
Setting
goals is an important part of the gospel.

Haws at the line and two shots.
It's a crazy feeling being at the
free throw line, knowing that you've shot a million of them. But this is the
one you have to make.
Well it definitely is a lot
easier to watch your husband play basketball than it is to watch your son.
There's a lot of emotion that goes into it when your son's out on the court.
[UNINTELLIGIBLE PHRASE] stolen
away by Jackson Emery. Now to Tyler Haws. Ty's ahead of the pack, and he dunks
it. He dunks it again. Driving throw down by Tyler Haws.
Often times people will say well,
of course he's good. Look at his dad. His dad was a great basketball player.
And in my mind I say oh no. You don't know. You do not know how hard he has
worked.
I never was the most talented
kid. But the one thing that my dad always taught me was that if we just work as
hard as we can, good things are going to happen.
When Tyler was in the third
grade, he was cut from a team-- a really good team and was devastated.
So Marty
pulled him aside and told him work harder than everybody and we'll put in the
time.
One of the things that we decided
that we would do is we would get up early. And we would go over to the church
and that we would just start working.
We did so many drills in the
summer. And it was repetition of those drills that made is so we could do them
in the game.
We would keep track. How many
free throws have we made today. And we would do it in tens.
We would try and shoot 100 a day
and get a certain number.
At first it was probably in the
60s or maybe 70s. And by the end, all you're doing is counting the misses.
It was so awesome to have him
there and be willing to help me in those early mornings in the summer.
Matched it like it was nothing.
No. We didn't want him to see that.
By 8 o'clock when I would take
off and go to work for me to have already spent two hours with him-- a great
blessing in my life and I think in Tyler's development.
The gift that Tyler has been
given is he just works. He'll work and work and work.
Sometimes maybe not having the
most natural talent or ability is not the worst thing in the world. For Tyler
it was I will work hard. And lots of good things have come from that.
Dear Elder Haws. You are hereby
called to serve as a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints. You are assigned to labor in the Philippines.
Oh my God.
It's always been my plan to serve
a mission. And I've made it a goal when I was a little kid in primary to serve
a mission. So a lot of people ask me why are you leaving basketball? You have
so much going for you.
Why are you leaving right now? Is that hard for you? And
if I would be making this decision right now then it would be really hard. But
just the fact that I made that decision a long time ago, it really has been an
easy decision for me.
As someone who has served a
mission, to be able to go and be able to see how the gospel can have an
influence on people's lives, that's a great blessing. And as a dad I'm really
happy that Tyler will get to experience that.
As a mom it is tough. But for me
I think of the happiness that the gospel brings me as a mother and having the
relationship with all of my kids and knowing that it's eternal. I think if he
can go and give that to another mom the same thing the gospel's given me, it's
OK. I am so happy he's serving.
Doing OK, bud?
Yeah.
You know I love you.
I love you too.
OK, buddy.
All right.
To be a priesthood man is a lot
more important than all of the other things. And we've been able to watch that
progress as he was a deacon and a teacher and a priest and watch him magnify
his calling, watch him serve, watch his leadership ability grow.
And for us to
see him honor his priesthood and know that that's an important thing in his
life-- that's something that as a parent gives you a lot of satisfaction.
A mission has always been my
plan. It's always been something I wanted to do. And I know that there's people
in the Philippines that need the gospel and are waiting for me.
And I know that
when we put Heavenly Father first that he's going to bless us. I just picture
myself back at the church with my dad rebounding for me.
And I just trust
myself and trust that my hard work will pay off and it'll go in.
I know that when
we put God first, we know that He will bless us, individually and as a familyπ
This has happened in my life and it can happen in each one of yours as well. And if you have not set any goals for this
year maybe the things that I have shared with you will help you to do so. I have learned the importance of setting goals, even if they are smallπ
Remember who
you are! You have a Heavenly Father who knows you each of you individually. He
knows your unique situation and He wants to help you through every situation in
your lives if you will but invite Him in. remember, He gave His Only Begotten
Son, even Jesus Christ for us.π
Jesus Christ
freely and willingly came to earth to be born in a manger, to be born of a mortal
mother, a chosen vessel. He learned and grew as we all do, being born on this
earth. He was a god who came down to earth, to die for each of our individual
sins. He rose from the grave after 3 days.π
Jesus Christ,
who’s birth we just celebrated, made it possible for each one of us to return
home to our heavenly home. Through His Atonement He made it possible for us to
have an eternal life, to have forever families if we live righteous lives. He made
repentance possible. He didn’t leave us alone He sent us the Holy Ghost as our
comforter.π
I know that
through the Atonement of Jesus Christ He enables us with the power and strength
that we need to get through any situation or circumstance that will come into
our lives. As we study through the Book of Mormon this year, we will learn more
about our Savior, Jesus Christ and His teachings for our lives. He was the
perfect example for us to followπ
Well, my dear
Family and Friends I have rambled on for a bit now. I have more to share, but
in a later post. Please keep praying every day, keep a prayer in your heart,
help those around you, love all those around you. Keep studying the scriptures
with me and all of our cyber study buddiesπ
I hope and pray that you are all starting
this new year off in an optimistic way. Be positive, keep smiling, Know that God lives, that Jesus Christ id His Only Begotten Son, know that Jesus died for each of us. Jesus paid the price for our individual sins and transgressions and wrong doings π
Our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ love each one of us individually. They are there for each one who has ever lived or who will ever live on this earth. πRemember that our Heavenly Father is only a prayer away. They are ever reaching down to lift us up to a place where we can get back on the right road that will lead us back to our heavenly home.
I love my Heavenly Father and His son, Jesus Christ who is our Savior. No matter how far off the straight and narrow road you may have gone there is nothing that you cannot overcome through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. I believe this and know in my heart that it is true. I know-- still rambling, I am done nowπ and until my
next post, make it a good week!!!
