Dear Family and
Friends
I hope and pray that
this week has gone by without any major issues in the lives of your family
members and friends. I also hope that you do not mind that I continue
classifying you as your family members and friends. I do this because I am hoping
and praying that you are sharing what you are learning each week.
Sharing with as least those
whit whom you are living – be it your family, your room mates, or what ever family
dynamics you have in your household. In our household we have three generations
of our family living under the same roof.
Sometimes it can get
a little crazy, but then whose household doesn’t get a little crazy sometimes. I
am also hoping that you might feel inspired to invite your neighbors over for
gospel study at least one night a week or over for a night of family home
evening activities😊
If I am not getting the message for
each lesson across in a meaningful way, please feel free to email me. If I don’t
know that it broke I cannot possible begin to fix it😊
The Gospel of Jesus
Christ is so very important in my life and that is why I want to share these
lessons and talks and my life experiences with each one of you. I want you to
feel just how important this can be in your lives as well😊
and this year’s study of the Book of Mormon is also something that I truly want
to share with each one of you.
If you are serious about reading and studying
the scriptures you must seriously consider reading the Book of Mormon if you
have never given the book a read before and if you have, it’s time to learn
more from this very precious book of scripture. You will find that this book
contains the fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and it is a companion to the
Bible.
I have found that the Book of Mormon makes many of the teachings in the
Bible become clearer as I have studied them together. I believe that you will
find this to be true as you study them together as well😊
You do realize that your
preparation for Sunday School class begins with your own personal study of the
scriptures. You must pay close attention to and record the spiritual promptings
you receive in your journal. Be sure to cover all of the readings for each week
in the Come,
Follow Me—For
Individuals and Families manual.
This is advice from
the Come, Follow Me for Individuals and Families Manual:
Nephi recorded the “things of God” (1 Nephi 6:3).
As you study Nephi’s record, pay attention to the things of God you find,
especially impressions from the Spirit.
The Book of Mormon begins with an account of a real family
experiencing real struggles. It happened in 600 BC, but there are things
about this account that might sound familiar to families today. This family was
living in a world of increasing wickedness, but the Lord promised them that if
they would follow Him, He would lead them to safety.
Along the way they had
good moments and bad moments; they experienced great blessings and miracles,
but they also had their fair share of arguments and contention. Rarely in
scripture is there such a lengthy account of a family trying to live the
gospel: a father struggling to inspire faith in his family, sons deciding
whether they will believe him, a mother fearing for the safety of her children,
and brothers dealing with jealousy and contention—and sometimes forgiving each
other. Overall, there is real power in following the examples of faith that
this family—despite their imperfections—demonstrated.
The scriptures are of great worth.
You know that there is one very prominent message that is found in the Book of Mormon and that is the great value of the word of God. Perhaps you might find this to be a good message to share as your family and friends begin studying the Book of Mormon. The following ideas for personal scripture study come directly from the Come, Follow Me for Individuals and Families manual:Ideas for Personal Scripture Study
The scriptures are of great worth.
The first six chapters of the Book of Mormon contain many
references to sacred books, sacred records, and the word of the Lord. As you
read 1 Nephi 1–6,
what do you learn about why the word of God is “of great worth”? (1 Nephi 5:21).
What do these passages teach you about the scriptures? What do you find that
inspires you to search the scriptures with greater commitment?
See also “Scriptures Legacy” (video, ChurchofJesusChrist.org).

Then you could move on to ask the following question: What do these accounts teach us about the importance of the scriptures? You can find the chapters listed below:
As you study together 1 Nephi Chapters 1-5 this week you may want to encourage your family members and friends to examine how Lehi studied the plates of brass as found in 1 Nephi 5:10–19, and then you might want to ask some questions like the following: What was Lehi’s attitude toward the scriptures? What did he find of value in them?
1 Nephi
5:10–19 Book of Mormon
10 And after they had given thanks unto the God of Israel, my
father, Lehi, took the records which were engraven upon the plates of brass,
and he did search them from the beginning.
11 And he beheld that they did contain the five books
of Moses, which gave an account of the creation of the world, and also of Adam
and Eve, who were our first parents;
12 And also a record
of the Jews from the beginning, even down to the commencement of the reign of
Zedekiah, king of Judah;
13 And also the prophecies of the holy prophets, from the
beginning, even down to the commencement of the reign of Zedekiah;
and also many prophecies which have been spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah.
14 And it came to pass that my father, Lehi, also found upon the
plates of brass
a genealogy
of his fathers;
wherefore he knew that he was a descendant of Joseph;
yea, even that Joseph who was the son of Jacob,
who was sold
into Egypt, and who was preserved
by the hand of the Lord, that he might preserve his father, Jacob, and all his
household from perishing with famine.
15 And they were also led
out of captivity and out of the land of Egypt, by that same God who had
preserved them.
16 And thus my father, Lehi, did discover the genealogy of his
fathers. And Laban also was a descendant of Joseph,
wherefore he and his fathers had kept the records.
17 And now when my father saw all these things, he was filled
with the Spirit, and began to prophesy concerning his seed—
18 That these plates of brass
should go forth unto all nations,
kindreds, tongues, and people who were of his seed.
19 Wherefore, he said that these plates of brass should never
perish; neither should they be dimmed any more by time. And he prophesied many
things concerning his seed.
You and your family members and friends could also explore Elder Richard G. Scott’s message “The Power of Scripture” (Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2011, 6–8) and /or read an excerpt from this message below:
The scriptures have potent power.
Elder
Richard G. Scott testified of the value of the scriptures:
“Scriptures
are like packets of light that illuminate our minds and give place to guidance
and inspiration from on high. They can become the key to open the channel to
communion with our Father in Heaven and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
“The
scriptures … can become stalwart friends that are not limited by geography or
calendar. They are always available when needed. Their use provides a
foundation of truth that can be awakened by the Holy Ghost. Learning,
pondering, searching, and memorizing scriptures is like filling a filing
cabinet with friends, values, and truths that can be called upon anytime,
anywhere in the world. …
“Pondering
a passage of scripture can be a key to unlock revelation and the guidance and
inspiration of the Holy Ghost. Scriptures can calm an agitated soul, giving
peace, hope, and a restoration of confidence in one’s ability to overcome the
challenges of life. They have potent power to heal emotional challenges when
there is faith in the Savior. They can accelerate physical healing” (“The Power of Scripture,”
Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2011, 6).
You do remember how important music is for inviting the Spirit right? So you could sing together a hymn about the scriptures, such as “As I Search the Holy Scriptures” (Hymns, no. 277). You can find the words to this hymn here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/hymns/as-i-search-the-holy-scriptures?lang=eng
Then you could
ask you family members and friends to share how their /or you could share how
your personal scripture study has blessed their lives or your life. You or they
could also share how the scriptures have inspired you or them to “come unto …
God … and be saved” (1 Nephi
6:4).
1 Nephi
6:4 Book of Mormon
4 For the fulness of mine intent is that I may persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob, and be saved.

The Book of Mormon testifies of Jesus Christ.
True to the purpose stated on its title page—to convince all that Jesus is the Christ—the Book of Mormon opens with Lehi’s remarkable vision of the
Savior. What do you learn about Jesus Christ from what Lehi saw? What are some
of the Savior’s “great and marvelous” works in your life? (1 Nephi 1:14).
We can gain our own testimonies as we soften our hearts.
As you may
know, Nephi is known for his powerful faith in the Lord, but it may be helpful
for you and your family members and friends to realize that he had also to work
very hard to gain his testimony—just as each one of us has to do. You may
want to have your family members and friends to see if they can identify in 1 Nephi
2:16–19
16 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, being exceedingly young,
nevertheless being large in stature, and also having great desires to know of
the mysteries
of God, wherefore, I did cry unto the Lord; and behold he did visit
me, and did soften
my heart that I did believe
all the words which had been spoken by my father;
wherefore, I did not rebel
against him like unto my brothers.
17 And I spake unto Sam, making known unto him the things which
the Lord had manifested unto me by his Holy Spirit. And it came to pass that he
believed in my words.
18 But, behold, Laman and Lemuel would not hearken unto my
words; and being grieved
because of the hardness of their hearts I cried unto the Lord for them.
19 And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto me, saying:
Blessed art thou, Nephi, because of thy faith,
for thou hast sought me diligently, with lowliness of heart.
1 Nephi
2:11–14 Book of Mormon
11 Now this he spake because of the stiffneckedness
of Laman and Lemuel; for behold they did murmur
in many things against their father,
because he was a visionary
man, and had led them out of the land of Jerusalem, to leave the land of their
inheritance, and their gold, and their silver, and their precious things, to
perish in the wilderness. And this they said he had done because of the foolish
imaginations of his heart.
12 And thus Laman and Lemuel, being the eldest, did murmur
against their father.
And they did murmur
because they knew not
the dealings of that God who had created
them.
13 Neither did they believe
that Jerusalem, that great city, could be destroyed
according to the words of the prophets. And they were like unto the Jews who
were at Jerusalem, who sought to take away the life of my father.
14 And it came to pass that my father did speak unto them in the
valley of Lemuel,
with power,
being filled with the Spirit, until their frames did shake
before him. And he did confound them, that they durst not utter against him;
wherefore, they did as he commanded them.
Book of Mormon
28 And it came to pass that Laman was angry with me, and also
with my father; and also was Lemuel, for he hearkened unto the words of Laman.
Wherefore Laman and Lemuel did speak many hard words
unto us, their younger brothers, and they did smite us even with a rod.
29 And it came to pass as they smote us with a rod, behold, an angel
of the Lord came and stood before them, and he spake unto them, saying: Why do
ye smite your younger brother with a rod? Know ye not that the Lord hath chosen
him to be a ruler
over you, and this because of your iniquities? Behold ye shall go up to
Jerusalem again, and the Lord will deliver
Laban into your hands.
30 And after the angel
had spoken unto us, he departed.
31 And after the angel had departed, Laman and Lemuel again
began to murmur,
saying: How is it possible that the Lord will deliver Laban into our hands?
Behold, he is a mighty man, and he can command fifty, yea, even he can slay
fifty; then why not us?

Now you
might want to consider sharing the following quotation by President
Harold B. Lee below: Our testimonies must be renewed daily.
President Harold B. Lee taught, “That which you possess today in testimony will not be yours tomorrow unless you do something about it” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Harold B. Lee [2000], 43). https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/teachings-harold-b-lee/chapter-5?lang=engThen you could ask your family members and friends the following question: What can each one of us do to keep our testimonies strong? Ideas for Personal Scripture Study
When I seek and trust the Lord, He can soften my heart.
Although Laman, Lemuel, and Nephi all grew up in the same family
and had similar experiences, there is quite a contrast between the ways they
responded to the divine direction their father received in this chapter. As you
read 1 Nephi 2,
see if you can identify why Nephi’s heart was softened while his brothers’
hearts were not. You might also think about your own responses to direction
from the Lord, whether through the Holy Ghost or His prophet. When have you
felt the Lord soften your heart so you could more willingly accept His
direction and counsel?
God will prepare a way for us to do His will.
As you continue to read and study together through the next chapters you will see that the experience of Lehi’s sons in 1 Nephi 3–4 may seem exceptional, but you will also notice that many of us have had experiences where we followed God’s will even though it seemed difficult. Read together with your family members and friends 1 Nephi 3–4 during this week. You may want to ask them to think about the following question: what truths did they find that reminded them of a personal experience? You may want to ask your family members and friends to share verses that taught these truths, and then ask them to share their experiences with your study group. And here is yet another question for you to ask your family members and friends: How do these truths help us when we are expected by God to do something that seems difficult?
If your family members and friends are a large enough group you may want to divide the your family study group into three groups or pairs and assign each group or pair to study one of the attempts to get the brass plates from Laban as found in the following passages: 1 Nephi 3:9–21; 1 Nephi 3:22–31; 4:1–4; and 1 Nephi 4:5–38.
1 Nephi
3:9–21 Book of Mormon
9 And I, Nephi, and my brethren took our journey in the
wilderness, with our tents, to go up to the land of Jerusalem.
10 And it came to pass that when we had gone up to the land of
Jerusalem, I and my brethren did consult one with another.
11 And we cast lots—who
of us should go in unto the house of Laban. And it came to pass that the lot
fell upon Laman; and Laman went in unto the house of Laban, and he talked with
him as he sat in his house.
12 And he desired of Laban the records which were engraven upon
the plates of brass, which contained the genealogy
of my father.
13 And behold, it came to pass that Laban was angry, and thrust
him out from his presence; and he would not that he should have the records.
Wherefore, he said unto him: Behold thou art a robber, and I will slay thee.
14 But Laman fled out of his presence, and told the things which
Laban had done, unto us. And we began to be exceedingly sorrowful, and my
brethren were about to return unto my father in the wilderness.
15 But behold I said unto them that: As
the Lord liveth, and as we live, we will not go down unto our father in the
wilderness until we have accomplished
the thing which the Lord hath commanded us.
16 Wherefore, let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of
the Lord; therefore let us go down to the land of our father’s inheritance,
for behold he left gold and silver, and all manner of riches. And all this he
hath done because of the commandments
of the Lord.
17 For he knew that Jerusalem must be destroyed,
because of the wickedness of the people.
18 For behold, they have rejected
the words of the prophets. Wherefore, if my father should dwell in the land
after he hath been commanded
to flee out of the land, behold, he would also perish. Wherefore, it must needs
be that he flee out of the land.
19 And behold, it is wisdom in God that we should obtain these records,
that we may preserve unto our children the language of our fathers;
20 And also that we may preserve
unto them the words which have been spoken by the mouth of all the holy prophets,
which have been delivered unto them by the Spirit and power of God, since the
world began, even down unto this present time.
21 And it came to pass that after this manner of language did I persuade
my brethren, that they might be faithful in keeping the commandments of God.
Book of Mormon
22 And it came to pass that we went down to the land of our
inheritance, and we did gather together our gold,
and our silver, and our precious things.
23 And after we had gathered these things together, we went up
again unto the house of Laban.
24 And it came to pass that we went in unto Laban, and desired
him that he would give unto us the records which were engraven upon the plates of brass,
for which we would give unto him our gold, and our silver, and all our precious
things.
25 And it came to pass that when Laban saw our property, and
that it was exceedingly great, he did lust
after it, insomuch that he thrust us out, and sent his servants to slay us,
that he might obtain our property.
26 And it
came to pass that we did flee before the servants of Laban, and we were obliged
to leave behind our property, and it fell into the hands of Laban.
27 And it came to pass that we fled into the wilderness, and the
servants of Laban did not overtake us, and we hid
ourselves in the cavity of a rock.
Book of Mormon
1 And it came to pass that I spake unto my brethren, saying: Let
us go up again unto Jerusalem, and let us be faithful
in keeping the commandments of the Lord; for behold he is mightier than all the
earth, then why not mightier
than Laban and his fifty, yea, or even than his tens of thousands?
2 Therefore let us go up; let us be strong
like unto Moses; for he truly spake unto the waters of the Red Sea
and they divided hither and thither, and our fathers came through, out of
captivity, on dry ground, and the armies of Pharaoh did follow and were drowned
in the waters of the Red Sea.
3 Now behold ye know that this is true; and ye also know that an
angel
hath spoken unto you; wherefore can ye doubt?
Let us go up; the Lord is able to deliver
us, even as our fathers, and to destroy Laban, even as the Egyptians.
4 Now when I had spoken these words, they were yet wroth, and
did still continue to murmur; nevertheless they did follow me up until we came
without the walls of Jerusalem.
5 And it was by night; and I caused that they should hide
themselves without the walls. And after they had hid themselves, I, Nephi,
crept into the city and went forth towards the house of Laban.
7 Nevertheless I went forth, and as I came near unto the house
of Laban I beheld a man, and he had fallen to the earth before me, for he was drunken
with wine.
8 And when I came to him I found that it was Laban.
9 And I beheld his sword,
and I drew it forth from the sheath thereof; and the hilt thereof was of pure
gold, and the workmanship thereof was exceedingly fine, and I saw that the
blade thereof was of the most precious steel.
10 And it came to pass that I was constrained
by the Spirit that I should kill Laban; but I said in my heart: Never at any
time have I shed the blood of man. And I shrunk and would that I might not slay
him.
11 And the Spirit said unto me again: Behold the Lord
hath delivered
him into thy hands. Yea, and I also knew that he had sought to take away mine
own life; yea, and he would not hearken unto the commandments of the Lord; and
he also had taken
away our property.
12 And it came to pass that the Spirit said unto me again: Slay
him, for the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands;
13 Behold the Lord slayeth
the wicked
to bring forth his righteous purposes. It is better
that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief.
14 And now, when I, Nephi, had heard these words, I remembered
the words of the Lord which he spake unto me in the wilderness, saying that: Inasmuch
as thy seed shall keep my commandments,
they shall prosper
in the land of promise.
15 Yea, and I also thought that they could not keep the
commandments of the Lord according to the law
of Moses, save they should have the law.
16 And I also knew that the law
was engraven upon the plates of brass.
17 And again, I knew that the Lord had delivered Laban into my
hands for this cause—that I might obtain the records according to his
commandments.
18 Therefore I did obey the voice of the Spirit, and took Laban
by the hair of the head, and I smote off his head with his own sword.
19 And after I had smitten off his head with his own sword, I
took the garments of Laban and put them upon mine own body; yea, even every
whit; and I did gird on his armor about my loins.
20 And after I had done this, I went forth unto the treasury of
Laban. And as I went forth towards the treasury of Laban, behold, I saw the servant
of Laban who had the keys of the treasury. And I commanded him in the voice of
Laban, that he should go with me into the treasury.
21 And he supposed me to be his master, Laban, for he beheld the
garments and also the sword girded about my loins.
22 And he spake unto me concerning the elders
of the Jews, he knowing that his master, Laban, had been out by night among
them.
23 And I spake unto him as if it had been Laban.
24 And I also spake unto him that I should carry the engravings,
which were upon the plates of brass,
to my elder brethren, who were without the walls.
25 And I also bade him that he should follow me.
26 And he, supposing that I spake of the brethren
of the church,
and that I was truly that Laban whom I had slain, wherefore he did follow me.
27 And he spake unto me many times concerning the elders of the
Jews, as I went forth unto my brethren, who were without the walls.
28 And it came to pass that when Laman saw me he was exceedingly
frightened, and also Lemuel and Sam. And they fled from before my presence; for
they supposed it was Laban, and that he had slain me and had sought to take
away their lives also.
29 And it came to pass that I called after them, and they did
hear me; wherefore they did cease to flee from my presence.
30 And it came to pass that when the servant of Laban beheld my
brethren he began to tremble, and was about to flee from before me and return
to the city of Jerusalem.
31 And now I, Nephi, being a man large in stature, and also
having received much strength
of the Lord, therefore I did seize upon the servant of Laban, and held him,
that he should not flee.
32 And it came to pass that I spake with him, that if he would
hearken unto my words, as the Lord liveth, and as I live, even so that if he
would hearken unto our words, we would spare his life.
33 And I spake unto him, even with an oath,
that he need not fear; that he should be a free
man like unto us if he would go down in the wilderness with us.
34 And I also spake unto him, saying: Surely the Lord hath commanded
us to do this thing; and shall we not be diligent in keeping the commandments
of the Lord? Therefore, if thou wilt go down into the wilderness to my father
thou shalt have place with us.
35 And it came to pass that Zoram
did take courage at the words which I spake. Now Zoram was the name of the
servant; and he promised that he would go down into the wilderness unto our
father. Yea, and he also made an oath unto us that he would tarry with us from
that time forth.
36 Now we were desirous that he should tarry with us for this
cause, that the Jews might not know concerning our flight into the wilderness,
lest they should pursue us and destroy us.
37 And it came to pass that when Zoram had made an oath
unto us, our fears
did cease concerning him.
38 And it came to pass that we took the plates of brass and the
servant of Laban, and departed into the wilderness, and journeyed unto the tent
of our father.
Ideas for Personal Scripture Study
God will prepare a way for me to do His will.
When the Lord commanded Lehi and his family to obtain the plates of
brass from Laban, He did not give specific instructions on how to accomplish
this commandment. This is often true of other commandments or personal
revelations we receive from God, and this might lead us to feel like He has
required “a hard thing” (1 Nephi 3:5).
What inspires you about Nephi’s response to the Lord’s command, found in 1 Nephi 3:7,
15–16? Is there anything you feel impressed to “go and do”?
As you study 1 Nephi 1–7,
look for ways God prepared the way for Lehi and his family. How has He done
this for you?

Ideas for Personal Scripture Study
Remembering the works of God can give me the faith to
obey His commandments.
When Laman and Lemuel felt like murmuring, they usually had Nephi
and Lehi nearby to encourage and admonish them. When you feel like murmuring,
reading the words of Nephi and Lehi can provide valuable counsel and
perspective. How did Nephi and Lehi try to help their family members build faith
in God? (see 1 Nephi 4:1–3;
5:1–8; 7:6–21).
What do you learn from their examples that can help you next time you are
tempted to murmur or rebel?
Ideas for Family Scripture Study and Family Home Evening
As you read the scriptures with your family, the Spirit can help
you know what principles to emphasize and discuss in order to meet the needs of
your family. Here are some ideas.
Throughout 1 Nephi 1–7,
you could encourage family members to notice interactions between members of
Lehi and Sariah’s family. What can we learn from these relationships that can
help our family?
Perhaps your family
would benefit from noting the difference between Laman and Lemuel’s response to
the Lord’s commands and Nephi’s response. What can we learn from 1 Nephi 2:11–13;
3:5–7
about murmuring? What blessings come when we exercise faith?
These verses could
inspire your family to keep a record of important events and experiences from
your lives. Maybe you could start a family journal, similar to the records
Nephi and Lehi kept about their family’s experiences. What might you include in
your family record?
What impresses us about Nephi’s example in these verses? How is our
family blessed when we “frankly forgive” each other?
For more ideas for teaching children, see this week’s outline
in Come, Follow Me—For Primary.“With so many forces trying to draw us away, how do we keep our vision fixed on the glorious happiness promised to the faithful? I believe the answer can be found in a dream that a prophet had thousands of years ago. I loved this story about the Three sisters, if you get the chance you should listen to President Uchtdorf’s whole talk, it is great😊 I am certain that each one of you and your family members and friends will enjoy it as well😊 It seems as though we are at the end of our lesson for this week. Please be sure to do the readings with your family members aand friends for next week.
Please remember who you are!!! You are each either a Son or a Daughter of God. He loves you and He knows each one of you individually. He is only a prayer away. He is always there for each one of you as He is for me. He will help each one of you through each and every day of your lives – if you will let Him. You must be the one to reach up to Him and invite Him and His son, Jesus Christ into your lives
Do continue to say your prayers every day – at least morning and night, this is such a helpful habit for each one of us to get into😊 You should know also that it is a habit that can be very easily broken as Satan does not want us to pray, he would have us believe that God does not care what happens to us. You must never fall into believing his lies. The Lord loves you and He wants to help lead and guide you back to your heavenly home😊
Please continue to read and study the Book of Mormon with me throughout this year. I promise you that if you do, you will feel the difference in your lives. Whenever I read in this sacred book, I always find peace😊 my days go better as well😊 Remember to pray for those in your family study group or those whom you would like to ask to join your family study group.
Your
Heavenly Father will bless your efforts to share your gospel studies with
others😊 remember that you must do as Moroni
invites you to do in Moroni Chapter 10:3-5:
3 Behold,
I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God
that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath
been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the
time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.
4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that
ye would ask
God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask
with a sincere heart,
with real intent,
having faith
in Christ, he will manifest
the truth
of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
If you do not have a Book of Mormon and you would like to receive a copy at no charge you can go here and request one: https://www.comeuntochrist.org/beliefs/book-of-mormon-request
